Rolex has long been associated with Hollywood. From appearing in films to being the choice of many high profile actors and directors, Rolex has often been Hollywood’s go-to timepiece. To further cement the association of Rolex and film, Rolex recently began creating promotional material to tie in with the Oscars. Last year, they created a recap of many classic films featuring Rolex timepieces. This year, they stepped things up a bit by creating a one minute short highlighting four of today’s best directors.

The short, called “Rolex Celebrates the Art of Storytelling,” features the directors talking about what makes a film great and ending with an visual announcing that Rolex is the “exclusive watch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.”

To celebrate Rolex’s partnership with the Academy and these four Oscar winning directors, we’ve decided to pick out some Rolex models that remind of us of the work of these incredible directors— here’s our list of Rolexes inspired by these Oscar-winning filmmakers.

Martin Scorsese

Martin Scorsese is a legend among directors, known for his incredible artistry and great passion for the art of film. Some of his many classic films include 1976’s Taxi Driver, 1980’s Raging Bull, and 1990s Goodfellas. Scorsese has featured many Rolex watches in his iconic films, including a number of Oyster Perpetual models.

For Martin Scorsese, we’ve chosen this 34mm Rolex Steel Oyster Perpetual model with a brown leather band. This model is sophisticated, classic, and rich, just like Scorsese’s films.

James Cameron

James Cameron is a visionary director. He has created many films that reach beyond the scope of what has ever been done on film before. Some of his films include 1994’s True Lies, 1997’s Titanic, and 2009’s Avatar. Cameron is an avid wearer of Rolex watches in his daily life and often uses the watches in his films.

For James Cameron, we’ve chosen the 36mm Rolex Datejust in white gold. The nautical color scheme here, along with this watch’s elegant yet practical design, reminds us of Cameron’s vision, passion, and commitment to making the impossible a reality.

Kathryn Bigelow

Kathryn Bigelow will forever hold a place in Oscars history, as she was the first woman to ever win the Academy Award for Best Director. Bigelow is known for her tenacity, unique visual style, and her choice of important subjects for her films. Some of her most notable films include 2008’s The Hurt Locker and 2012’s Zero Dark Thirty.

For Kathryn Bigelow, we’ve chosen this 36mm Rolex Datejust. This model features a stainless steel case and band, and a black dial. This Datejust is simple, bold, and unfussy— just like Bigelow’s storytelling.

Alejandro G. Inarritu

Alejandro G. Inarritu is a director that’s known for his incredible visual style and his exploration of the human condition in his works. Some of his notable films include 2015’s Birdman and 2016’s The Revenant.
